At 11:40 PM a homeowner's water heater lets go and starts draining across the basement floor. They are calling someone tonight, they will pay a premium for the visit, and they will hire whoever answers first. The only part you control is what happens when the call hits your line.

Most field service owners - plumbing, HVAC, garage door, restoration - picked one of four answers years ago, usually by accident: voicemail, an on-call rotation, a live answering service, or an AI receptionist. Almost nobody has run the comparison. Here it is: monthly cost, answer speed, booking ability, emergency triage, and the one cost nobody prices in.

  4. Track two numbers every week. After-hours calls answered, and tech wake-ups. The first should climb; the second should fall until it matches your emergency list.
